Swincombe Mill is a detached, high quality barn conversion retaining lots of the original, traditional features. It enjoys a tranquil, secluded location on the edge of Challacombe village in the Exmoor National Park. It sleeps up to four people and has an enclosed south facing garden. It is on part of the Woolhanger Estate, a large hill farm with some of the most spectacular views on Exmoor.
Swincombe Mill has a large open plan double aspect 37-foot long living / dining area, with a full roof height ceiling, exposed beams and a slate floor. There is a large wood burning stove that sits in front of rock, which is incorporated into the end wall.
From the living / dining area you walk out onto a large area of decking with garden furniture and a gas barbeque, where you can sit overlooking the surrounding fields.
There is a fully fitted kitchen with a large gas range cooker, integrated fridge freezer and dishwasher. Joining this is a utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer and a separate W.C. The large spacious bathroom also has an extra wide walk-in power shower.
There are two bedrooms both with 6'6" long zip and link beds, which give maximum option on sleeping arrangements of super king or twin rooms - this must be requested when booking.
The cottage has oil fired central heating throughout. There is also the wood burning stove - we provide all the logs.
In the village you will find the Black Venus Pub, voted best pub in North Devon. They serve delicious locally produced meals, and it is within walking distance of the cottage (remember to take the torch for the walk back).
Challacombe Post Office and Store keeps all the essentials, this is where our welcome packs come from. They also serve cream teas in the afternoon, again within walking distance from the cottage.
You can enjoy some wonderful walks from Swincombe Mill to the reservoir and on to the moor, with panoramic views to South Wales, Lundy Island and Dartmoor.
We have a small herd of wild Exmoor Ponies which can be seen on Butter Hill. Herds of Red Deer can frequently be seen grazing on the moor, and for the bird watchers there are Buzzards, Kites, Snipe and Woodcocks to be spotted.
There is stabling with grazing available but only by separate agreement - this must be arranged at time of booking. Note there is no mobile phone signal on any network at the Swincombe Mill - great for properly escaping and having a real holiday!
